Why compare cost per use, not sticker price?
A $600 blender looks like the opposite of frugal next to a $25 one — but if the cheap one needs replacing every few years while the premium one lasts a decade, the premium can cost less per use over that window. What flips that outcome is the real economics — lifespan, repairability, maintenance, running cost — not how often you blend. This calculator exists to answer one question with math instead of marketing: which decision is actually cheaper to own?
The two formulas that drive everything
Total Cost of Ownership = price + (maintenance + energy + repair per year × holding years) − resale value Cost Per Use = Total Cost of Ownership ÷ (weekly uses × 52 × holding years)
The calculator also models replacement churn: if a cheap item is expected to last 3 years and you plan to keep something for 10, it counts buying it multiple times — so "cheap repeatedly" is compared fairly against "premium once".
The four decisions
- BUY CHEAP — you won't use or keep it enough for a premium item to pay back. Spend less.
- BUY BETTER — the better item's lower total cost of ownership pays for its higher price.
- BUY ONCE — it lasts long enough that repeated cheap replacements would cost more. Buy one good one and keep it.
- DON'T BUY — you'd use it so rarely that no purchase is worth it. Borrow, repair, or skip.
Worked example: the $25 vs $600 blender
Blend as often as you like for 10 years. The cheap blender lasts ~3 years, so you'd replace it ~4 times ($100), while a durable premium model lasts the full window. Run the numbers above: the two options are compared at the same usage, so frequency cancels out and the outcome hinges on lifespan and price — not on how many times a week you blend.
An honest word about "cheap"
"Cheap" isn't a moral victory. If the data says spending $25 does the job at your usage, this calculator tells you to spend $25. If the data says the $600 model is cheaper over your lifetime, it tells you to buy that instead. Evidence determines the decision — never brand, never aspiration.

What does cost per use mean? ▼
Cost per use is the total cost of owning something over its life — price plus maintenance, energy, and repair, minus resale value — divided by the number of times you actually use it. It is the honest way to compare a cheap item against a premium one.
Is it ever worth buying the expensive blender? ▼
Only when its real economics do — the premium model lasts long enough, is repairable, or costs little enough to keep that its total lifetime cost beats repeatedly replacing a cheap one. Frequency alone changes your cost per use; it does not, by itself, make the expensive product the better value. If both options are used the same way, the one with the lower total cost of ownership is the frugal call.
